Any parent, educator or community member may refer students for Vancouver Public Schools’ Challenge Program for highly capable students in grades one through five.

Challenge is the district’s program for meeting the unique learning needs of students with demonstrated intellectual ability and/or potential in terms of cognitive capacity, academic achievement and exceptional creativity.

Dec. 3 is the deadline to return referral forms to the Challenge office. Referred students in grades K-4 will be assessed by teachers on scheduled Saturdays in January and February for potential placement for the 2013-2014 school year.

Qualified students attend one of the Challenge magnet school sites and participate in a rigorous curriculum designed to maximize individual potential.

Referral forms are available in all elementary school offices, or on the district website at www.vansd.org. Go to “Parents & Families” and choose “Programs of Choice and Magnets,” then choose “Challenge/Honors.” More information is available on the district’s Challenge/Honors website or by calling 360-313-1360.
