The host Clark College Penguins women’s basketball team opened the Igloo Classic with a 106-59 loss Friday to a team made of post-collegiate players. Anita Burdick, a former Oregon State player, went 8 of 9 from the field and scored 24 points for Portland. Kedzie Gunderson, a former University of Oregon player, finished with 20.

Clark was led by Ashlie Nguyen with 16 points and Toni Doroha with 14.

The Penguins led 21-20 midway through the first half, but the Energy dominated the rest of the way.

“We’re still in a building situation,” first-year Clark coach Al Aldridge said. “It’s unfortunate in our process we had to run into that team.”

Because the Energy are an exhibition team, Clark still advances to the winner’s bracket of the eight-team tournament at O’Connell Sports Center. The Penguins play Southwestern Oregon at 6 p.m. Saturday.

The tournament continues through Sunday.
