Students in grades four through 10 are invited by the Washington State Library to enter its Letters About Literature contest, in which they can write a personal letter to their favorite author, living or dead.
The deadline for the contest is Jan. 11. At the state level, a $125 cash prize is up for grabs, as well as the ability to advance to the national competition. The first-place prize in the national contest is $1,000.
There are three age groups for the contest: Level one is for grades four through six (minimum age is 9 years old); level two is for grades seven through eight; level three is for grades nine and 10.
Because of budget constraints, the contest for students in the 11th and 12th grades is not available this year.
