An ongoing effort to remake a busy interchange in the Salmon Creek area will permanently close a section of Northeast 17th Avenue starting Tuesday.
Drivers will no longer be able to use the road to connect to Northeast 139th Street at 20th Avenue, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation. Motorists will, however, be able to use other cross streets between 17th and 20th avenues.
The closure will make room for the fourth stage of the $133 million Salmon Creek Interchange Project — a new bridge carrying Northeast 139th Street over Interstate 5 and Interstate 205.
The change will dead-end Northeast 17th Street in a cul-de-sac just north of its connection with 139th Street, according to WSDOT.
The entire Salmon Creek Interchange Project aims to alleviate congestion and improve flow on at the northern convergence of I-5 and I-205. The project is scheduled for completion in 2014.
