Squalicum scored three second-half goals on Saturday to end the state playoff run for the Hockinson girls soccer team with a 4-1 win over the Hawks in Bellingham.

The Class 2A state quarterfinal contest was tied at 1-1 at halftime, thanks to a goal from Kavita Battan off an Aurora Bodenhamer assist.

Playing their sixth game in 13 days, the Hawks ran out of steam after Squalicum scored twice off corner kicks early in the second half.

“Six games in 13 days caught up with us,” Hockinson coach Zack Goldfinch said.

Hockinson had to battle back from a loss to Tumwater in the first round of the district tournament by winning three loser-out district matches to reach the state tournament.

“I’m really proud of my girls. To fight back through district after losing a game we shouldn’t have lost showed a lot of character,” Goldfinch said.

The Hawks then won 2-1 at Lindbergh on Wednesday in the first round of the Class 2A state tournament. That was the first state tournament win for the Hockinson girls soccer program.
