Vancouver’s second annual Transgender Day of Remembrance will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the First Congregational Church of Christ, 1220 N.E. 68th St.

The International Transgender Day of Remembrance has memorialized transgender victims of hate crimes since 1999. The international event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, a transgender African-American woman who was murdered on Nov. 28, 1998 in Allston, Mass.

During the event, the names of about 40 transgender people, who have been murdered worldwide in 2012, will be read aloud.

Jackie Stone, president of Northwest Gender Alliance, organized Vancouver’s first observance of the event last year.

“There is a big population of transgender people and their allies in Southwest Washington, so we decided to do one here,” Stone said.

The event, sponsored by the alliance, TriplePoint Youth Group and Transactive, is free and open to the public.
