Try This: A salute to veterans

The city of Vancouver honors veterans with the 26th annual Veterans Parade at Fort Vancouver, featuring an Air Force flyover and a 21-gun salute fired by howitzers from the parade grounds. An expected 2,500 individuals will participate in marching bands, military and veterans units, community organizations and Scout troops. The parade moves along Officers Row, through the Vancouver Barracks and ends at Pearson Air Museum.

When: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today.

The parade is one of many options for getting out and about this weekend. Others include a musical and symphonic concert.

2. Honoring craft and culture

The Clark County Historical Museum will host a Native American Arts Market as part of Native American Heritage Month. Visitors can find seasonal gifts by the area’s most prominent Native American artists showcasing their skills and artwork. There will also be activities for children. Also on display at the museum, the exhibit “A Taste of Native America” showcases the food and related culture of native people throughout Washington.

3. Local take on Broadway favorite

Battle Ground Public Schools presents “Singin’ In The Rain,” the musical set in Hollywood at the advent of talking pictures. Silent film star Don Lockwood and his vapid leading lady, Lina Lamont, try to make the transition to sound with the help of Don’s best friend, Cosmo Brown, and aspiring actress Kathy Selden.

When: 7 tonight.

4. Beethoven style

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra welcomes special guests during its concert. Oregon Symphony concertmaster violinist Sarah Kwak and guest conductor Gregory Vajda of the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra will perform. The concert will feature Beethoven’s Violin Concerto and the American premiere of Vajda’s original composition “Orlando’s Awakening.”

When: 3 p.m. today and 7 p.m. Sunday.

Where: Skyview Concert Hall, 1300 N.W. 139th St., Vancouver.

Admission: $35 to $50, $30 for seniors, $10 for students.
