2A football: Ridgefield routed by Capital

RIDGEFIELD — Capital of Olympia took a lead in the first four minutes and did not let up Friday, beating Ridgefield 42-6 in a Class 2A district playoff game.

“This was a tough game,” Ridgefield coach Dan Anderson said. “The guys fought hard and never gave up. I’m proud of every last one of them.”

Capital (8-2) rushed for 328 yards on its way to 397 yards of offense, led by 112 on the ground from Kai Vansickle. The Cougars advance to the 16-team state Class 2A playoffs.

“It’s no wonder this team has the record it has,” Anderson said. “They have a very talented team and we had the challenge of trying to stop their run game.”

Ridgefield, meanwhile, was held to 49 yards on the ground and committed seven turnovers — three fumbles and four interceptions.

Capital linebacker Jakob Racimo got credit for four of those turnovers.

“The turnovers were very hard to swallow,” Anderson said. “We had a difficult hill to climb and in the end it was just too much.”

Ridgefield (6-4) got on the board with two minutes remaining when Dallas Wells returned a fumble 32 yards for a touchdown.

“These guys really pulled together this season,” Anderson said. “I am impressed by their efforts. At the beginning of the season we said we were going to make the playoffs as one of the smallest 2A teams in Washington. And look at us, we did what we said we would do.”

After the game Ridgefield coaches said farewell to their 18 seniors.

“They were the veterans,” Anderson said. “I’m proud of how they showed the underclassmen how to work hard and the meaning of giving it your all for this game.”
