Sharon Hart of the Columbia River Mashers Composite team finished second in the varsity girls race during the Washington High School Cycling League state championship races. The event was held on May 20 at Joint Base Lewis McChord.
The course covered about 14 miles. Hart finished in 1 hour, 27 minutes and 27 seconds. She was 40 seconds behind winner Mikayla Davis of Eastside Composite, but won the season points title for varsity girls after four races.
Columbia River Mashers were the team champions, topping a list of 20 teams with 2,204 points Camas Composite placed 13th. This was the second season that the National Interscholastic Cycling Association sanctioned races in Washington. One of its four races this spring was held at Washougal MX Park.
In the girls junior varsity race, Susannah Hart of Columbia River Composite won with a time of 1:38.58. In the boys junior varsity race, Zach Vergillo of the Camas Composite Team finished second with a time of 1:14:58. The JV races had more participants than the varsity events, with a field of 27 riders in the boys JV race.
Special Olympics championships
Athletes and Unified Partners from Clark County will participate June 2-3 in the Washington Special Olympics State Summer Games at Joint Base Lewis McChord. Sports included in the Summer Games are swimming, track and field, cycling, powerlifting and soccer.

Running series starts fast
A total of 120 runners finished the first race in the Clark County Running Club’s summer series.
Jesse McChesney of Vancouver won Wednesday’s 5-kilometer race that started and ended at David Douglas Park in Vancouver. The 23-year-old finished in 15:56.
This summer, the annual series runs for 13 Wednesdays, with the races starting at 7 p.m. Most of the races use the same course for two consecutive weeks to allow runners to compare their times. The second David Douglas Park run will take place at 7 p.m. this Wednesday.

Vancouver USA Marathon nears
Friday is the last day to register in advance for the second Vancouver USA Marathon and Half Marathon, scheduled for June 17. Runners can register during the fitness expo on June 15-16 at the Hilton Vancouver, but it will cost more to sign up there than it does to register before June 1.

• Solstice Run seeks participants — Registration is open for the June 23 Summer Solstice Run and Walk in Vancouver.
The event, featuring 3-mile and 6-mile courses, is a benefit for the YMCA. The races begins at 6 p.m. The mostly-flat courses start and finish in downtown Vancouver. In addition to the races, the event will feature a post-race street dance, and prizes for best costumes.
