Try This: Local bands on the march

Join the community at the 48th annual Hazel Dell Parade of Bands. The parade showcases school marching bands, local groups and more, all representing this year’s theme of “Remember When.” The parade will be led by Grand Marshals Mike Collins, Roy Sonney and Bob Kuzma.

When: 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

Where: Fire District 6, Station 1, 8800 N.E. Hazel Dell Ave.; parade route runs along Northeast Hazel Dell Avenue and Northeast Highway 99, between Northeast 63rd and 94th streets.

The parade is among several options for getting out and about this weekend. Others include Dozer Day and a night of cabaret.

Singing songs of Broadway

The Vancouver USA Singers bring Broadway to the stage with “A Night of Cabaret” concert. The ensemble, accompanied by local band Up Front, will perform songs from musicals such as “Guys and Dolls,” “Oklahoma” and “Les Misérables.” This is the final concert of the season for the choral group.

Jump aboard a bulldozer

Play in a large sandbox at the annual Dozer Day, hosted and sponsored by the Nutter Foundation. Children can help operate real bulldozers, dump trucks and excavators at this community event, which also features hands-on activities including digging for treasure, pipe crawls and concrete crafts. The proceeds benefit local children’s charities.

When: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

An ‘Enchanted’ fairy tale

Christian Youth Theater presents “Enchanted Sleeping Beauty,” a stage production about Princess Briar Rose, who is cursed by the witch Evilina as a child. Sixteen years later, it’s up to Prince Alexander to rescue Briar Rose and the kingdom from an enchanted sleep. Fighting through the Wall of Thorns, a False Princess and the Dark Knight, the prince must find a way to break the curse.

When: 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. The show runs through May 27.

‘Battleship’ explodes onto screen

Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch) is forced to get his act together by older brother Stone (Alexander Skarsgard) and joins the Navy. Alex quickly moves up the ranks, becoming a lieutenant on a ship that will be the only defense against the intergalactic invaders and the destruction of Earth. “Battleship” is rated PG-13.
