Republican Matthew Homola, 38, of Vancouver, has filed to run for the 17th Legislative District seat being vacated by Rep. Tim Probst, D-Vancouver.
Homola joins Republican school board president Julie Olson and Democratic teaching coach Monica Stonier, who also have filed for candidacy in the race. More details about Homola and his candidacy were not immediately available on Tuesday morning.
Purchasing agent Mike Appel of Vancouver announced on Monday that he will no longer seek election to the seat.
Appel, who describes himself as an “independent conservative Republican with a bit of a Libertarian streak” who is not the “chosen establishment pick by either political party,” said he had difficulty raising the money needed to run an effective campaign.
Through his campaign website, Appel said he plans to proportionally return his unused campaign donations to those who gave money to his campaign.
On April 22, Probst announced that he will not seek re-election and instead will challenge incumbent state Sen. Don Benton, R-Vancouver.
Also on Tuesday: Republican John Morgan filed for 20th Legislative District, Position 2. Democrat Ron Barca filed for Clark County commissioner, District 1. Republican David Madore filed for Clark County commissioner, District 2. Jim West and Sherry Erickson filed for Clark Public Utilities commissioner, District 1. Attorney David Gregerson filed for Clark County Superior Court, Department 2. Superior Court Judges John Nichols and James Rulli filed for re-election.
The deadline to file is 5 p.m. Friday; 4 p.m. if the candidate files online.
A complete list of candidates will be published in Saturday’s newspaper.
