Police arrest 6 after searching Hazel Dell home

Authorities detained 14 people and later arrested six of them after raiding an alleged drug house in Hazel Dell early Thursday.

The house at 6312 N.E. Hazel Dell Ave. was the subject of more than 40 calls to 911 calls since Jan. 1, said Sgt. Duncan Hoss with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s detectives served a warrant at the home, near Northeast 63rd Street, at 4:30 a.m. with the help of the Southwest Washington Regional SWAT team and the Vancouver Police Department’s Neighborhood Response Teams.

Hoss said 14 people were detained without incident during the search. Six of them were eventually arrested.

Arrested were:

o Anthony McAndrew, 49, who lives at the home, was arrested on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver (methamphetamine).

o Thomas Miller, 45, on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine).

o Michelle Carpenter, 33, for an outstanding Department of Corrections warrant.

o Michael Serdoz, 39, for felony warrants.

o Athina Featherby, 21, on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine).

o Steven Eikleberry, 43, on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine).

The eight people who were detained but not arrested were released at the scene.

Hoss said the search was the result of a street-level drug investigation by the sheriff’s Tactical Detectives Unit. The unit, which Hoss supervises, has been keeping an eye on the home for a few months “because it’s been such a high call volume for the area,” he said. Neighbors had also complained of suspicious activity and lots of traffic in the area.

“It (the home) had become a flop house for drug users, drug sales and wanted felons,” Hoss said in a bulletin.

Police vehicles temporarily blocked parts of Hazel Dell Avenue and 63rd Street during the operation.

Richard French, who lives across the street from the searched house, said he woke up early in the morning to a loud boom.

“I thought there was a car wreck in front of the house,” he said. Then he heard several more booms, a helicopter overhead and dogs barking.

French eventually went upstairs where he could see several Vancouver police and unmarked cars in the area. The home was lit up.

“You could see flashlights everywhere,” he said.

Vancouver police and sheriff’s cars lined the street until about 8 a.m., when most left the scene. The single-story yellow home’s windows were shattered, its blinds damaged. Across the street sheriff’s deputies were talking with people outside a large white van. Two women walking by the scene, who didn’t give their names, said they were glad police have been looking into the home.

Neighbor French agreed.

“I don’t like the fact that there’s something going on at this house that is serious enough that the police have to kick the door in early in the morning,” he said. But he’s glad police investigated and took action.
