A man involved in a shooting at an Orchards apartment complex in 2010 was sentenced Wednesday to about 30 years in prison.
The day after the shooting, Adam S. Berndt, 24, fired at Portland police officers who pursued him.
Berndt pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted murder relating to the Aug. 25, 2010, shooting of 29-year-old Steven Mc-Knight. The confrontation occurred in the parking lot of Prairie View Apartments, 12611 N.E. 99th St., during a drug transaction.
Berndt admitted to Clark County Superior Court Judge Scott Collier that he shot McKnight “multiple times.” Prosecutors said he fired four shots, which they allege showed he had intent to kill. Mc-Knight, who was shot in the hip, shoulders and both arms, recovered from the shooting.
Berndt fled and the day after the shooting, he was found hiding in a northeast Portland home. Federal authorities came to serve warrants, including one for a parole violation, police said following the incident. He fired shots at a deputy U.S. marshal. Multiple shots were fired at Berndt in response and he was seriously injured.
No police officers were injured.
On Wednesday, he showed no visible signs of injury. His attorney, Tom Phelan, said in court that Berndt had trouble hearing out of one ear.
Berndt has already pleaded guilty to attempted aggravated murder charges in Multnomah County relating to the shootout, said Clark County Senior Deputy Prosecutor Alan Harvey. Berndt will be sentenced later this month and is expected to receive a 30-year sentence there, as well, Harvey told the judge.
Harvey said Berndt’s Portland shootout was taken into account in the plea bargain; attorneys in Multnomah and Clark counties agreed that Berndt should serve a total of 30 years for both events. His sentence will be served in an Oregon prison.
