Vancouver personal trainer Scott Binder is on a mission to revolutionize the local population through proper diet and exercise.

Binder is leading a community weight-loss challenge, Vancouver RVLution, to encourage residents to lose 20,000 pounds in 2012. As part of the campaign, Binder offers weekly meetings with weigh-ins, nutrition seminars and exercise — all for free.

“We’re extremely excited because this program is not based on fads, quick promises or dramatic changes in diet,” Binder said. “It works because it’s doable and it helps those who embrace it achieve and maintain the weight and health they’ve always wanted.”

The weekly meetings begin at 4 p.m. on Sundays in Vancouver. Locations will be shared on the group’s Facebook page. During the 90-minute meeting, participants can get their body fat level checked, get weighed and have body measurements taken.

Participants also receive some nutrition education, specifically about blood-sugar stabilization and adequate nutrient intake. And every meeting ends with 30 to 45 minutes of exercise, such as Zumba.

In addition to the free information and exercise, Binder said the weekly meetings serve as motivation to stay active.

The program kicked off last month and has already attracted about 50 people each meeting, Binder said.

The Vancouver RVLution is part of a national campaign by MonaVie, a weight management product company. However, people participating in the Vancouver challenge, and other challenges across the country, are not required to use or purchase any products.

It’s not the only effort to get Clark County residents to shed pounds. Last week, Camas Mayor Scott Higgins and Washougal Mayor Sean Guard faced off, belly to belly, at Capt. William Clark Park in Washougal to launch the yearlong community weight-loss challenge, “Camas and Washougal On A Diet.”

Sparked by the national obesity epidemic, that challenge will offer free nutrition seminars, community activities and daily exercise events in an effort to help residents of the two communities lose 10,000 pounds in 12 months. More information on that program is available at Camas and Washougal on a Diet.
