A Puyallup man was seriously injured Wednesday when he lost control of his car and hit a semi truck on state Highway 14 near Stevenson.

The crash happened just after 10 a.m. about a mile east of the Bridge of the Gods, said Trooper Ryan Tanner, Washington State Patrol spokesman.

Gary E. Vaughn, 56, was driving east near milepost 42 when he lost control of his 1990 Honda Civic, crossed the center line and hit a westbound semi truck hauling two empty tank trailers.

Vaughn was airlifted to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center with serious injuries. He was listed in critical condition Thursday evening.

Brian K. Van Dyken of Maple Falls, driver of the semi, was uninjured, state patrol said.

Traffic was detoured around the scene for two and a half hours.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
