Olbrich’s Linfield team is awaiting Monday’s announcement of at-large bids to the NCAA Division III national tournament. The Wildcats finished second to Whitman in the Northwest Conference tournament.
Northwest’s DeLapp garners CCC honor
Northwest University senior Paige DeLapp was named the Cascade Collegiate Conference Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week for the period ending April 29.
The Evergreen High School graduate cut three seconds off her personal record in the 800 meters Saturday at the Saint Martin’s Invitational in Lacey, placing second in 2 minutes, 14.42 seconds.
Her time achieved an automatic qualifier for the NAIA championships May 24-26 in Marion Ind., and is the eighth-best time in the NAIA this spring.
Joscelyn Minton of Saint Martin’s won in 2:13.39, a personal record by more than a second and school record for the Saints.
“Paige has been a wonderful student-athlete to coach during my time at NU,” coach Mark Mandi told northwest.edu/athletics. “She works extremely hard and does everything the coaches ask of her. This honor really goes to show her love and commitment to Jesus and her desire to honor and serve him in all capacities of her life. She had an amazing performance this past weekend and I hope she can continue to finish out her collegiate running career well.”
Also for Northwest, freshman Meagan Governor was sixth in the 1,500 meters. The La Center High School graduate’s time of 4:59.88 was a personal record by five seconds and a qualifying time for the CCC championships, May 10-12 in Klamath Falls, Ore.
EWU’s Clark garners offseason work award
Eastern Washington junior receiver Ashton Clark was named Most Improved by the Eagles football coaching staff in offseason and spring practice work.
The Heritage High School graduate ended the spring with a team-leading 15 catches for 215 yards and two touchdowns in four scrimmages.
Clark had 33 catches for 436 yards and four touchdowns during the 2011 regular season.
Piette helps WWU crew to WIRA crown
The Western Washington University varsity eight won the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship Regatta on California’s Lake Natoma on Sunday.
WWU senior stroke Jean Piette is a Columbia River High School graduate. The Vikings beat runner-up Humboldt State by half a boat length, covering the 2-kilometer course in 6 minutes, 45.9 seconds and avenging a loss to the Lumberjacks at the previous week’s Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference Championships in Eugene.
NCAA bids will be announced Monday. WWU is seven-time champion.
Concordia’s pair place at Pacific meet
Concordia University junior Gabi Dixson won the discus and placed second to different teammates in the shot put and hammer Saturday at the Pacific Twilight meet in Forest Grove, Ore.
Dixson, a homeschool graduate who competed for Battle Ground High School, had marks of 163 feet, 5 inches in discus; 164-3 in hammer and 45-9 in shot put.
Cavaliers senior Junia Limage, a Fort Vancouver High School graduate. was fourth in the 1,500 meters, her time of 4 minutes, 34.29 seconds an “A” qualifier for NAIA nationals.
Ard powers Cougars to victory over ASU
Junior first baseman Taylor Ard delivered a run-scoring single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Washington State a 7-6 victory over No. 23 Arizona State on Sunday in Pullman.
The Prairie High School graduate, a second team All-West Region selection last year, hit his ninth home run of the season earlier in the game. He finished with three RBI as the Cougars (22-18, 8-9 Pacific-12 Conference) defeated a ranked team for the seventh time this spring. Ard was the leading home run hitter in the former Pacific-10 Conference last season with 10.
“We definitely did not want to get swept at home,” Ard told wsucougars.com. “It was big win for us and now we have to get ready to play California.”
Ard, who was a junior college All-American in his one season at Mount Hood Community College in 2009, has been selected in the Major League Baseball draft each of the past two seasons.
Georgia’s Kimbell named All-SEC again
Georgia sophomore Lilly Kimbell was named Second Team All-Southeastern Conference in women’s tennis for the second consecutive year.
Kimbell, a former Vancouver resident who became a four-time state singles champion in high school at New Braunfels, Texas, was 23-8 as a sophomore, 9-1 in SEC play.
Kimbell gave the No. 6 Bulldogs their only point with a singles victory in a 4-1 loss to No. 2 Florida in the conference championship on April 22 in Oxford, Miss. She and Maho Kowase won their doubles match, but the Gators claimed the doubles point by winning two of the three matches.
Georgia learned Tuesday that received an at-large bid to the NCAA championships — the programs’ 26th consecutive appearance — and will host first- and second-round action. The Bulldogs will face College of Charleston in the first round. The winner will then play Arizona State or Clemson.
