Ikea on Wednesday, March 28, officially plugged into a solar energy system at its Portland store near Interstate 205 and Northeast Airport Way. The 62,500-square-foot photovoltaic array is built with 2,072 panels. It’s expected to produce approximately 568,900 kilowatt hours of electricity annually, the equivalent of eliminating the emissions of 77 cars or powering 48 homes yearly.
The Portland installation is Ikea’s 16th solar energy project in the U.S., and the company has 21 more installations in the works. Ikea owns and operates each of its rooftop solar energy systems. REC Solar, one of the largest U.S. solar electric installers in the U.S., installed the Portland project.
