YWCA sexual assault program loses staffer

Joan Renner, one of the founders of the YWCA Clark County’s sexual assault program, has decided to leave the agency after 33 years.

Renner’s departure follows that of Debra Adams, who stepped down as director of the Y’s domestic violence program earlier this year for the same reason — a shrinking budget.

In 1980 Renner helped initiate the only program in the county that provides free, 24-hour crisis intervention and advocacy for sexual assault victims and survivors. The program has grown to include support groups, legal and medical advocacy, crisis intervention and community education.

From 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on March 29, Renner’s career will be celebrated during a farewell party at the Y, which is at 3609 Main Street in Vancouver. RSVP to 360-906-4303 or awestfall@ywcaclarkcounty.org.

Laurie Schacht will be interim director of the Sexual Assault Program.
