Ridgefield — Teams of sixth grade students from Union Ridge and South Ridge elementary schools earned kudos for taking first and second place, respectively, in the “Math is Cool” competition Feb. 10 at Fort Vancouver High School.

Ridgefield’s team outpaced the competition significantly, with only four points separating Union Ridge’s first place from South Ridge’s second place finish, while nearly 30 points separated Ridgefield from the other schools’ teams.

“The program provides a great way to challenge students by encouraging critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork,” said Morning Stalcup, a sixth grade teacher and “Math is Cool” team coach at South Ridge.
