A fast response time helped firefighters save most of an eight-unit detached garage building in Orchards on Wednesday night, an official said.

At 7:53 p.m., firefighters were called to the Evergreen Park Apartments at 4619 N.E. 112th Ave., said Firefighter/paramedic Kevin Stromberg. The first crew arrived from Station 6, about a mile away. It had been closed due to the recession and reopened.

Firefighters found smoke coming from a unit of the detached garage building. Cutting through its door, they found flames inside. They extinguished the fire in about 10 minutes, Stromberg said.

The units share a common attic. Had flames reached the attic, they could have destroyed the building, Stromberg said.

No one was reported injured.

Sixteen firefighters dealt with the blaze.

A fire marshal was working Wednesday night to determine the cause and dollar damage estimate.
