Orchards — Native American and Alaskan native students in the Evergreen, Vancouver and Battle Ground school districts shared their culture via dancing, drumming and more at the Native American education program (Title VII) traditional pow-wow at Covington Middle School on March 3. Representatives from tribes across Washington and Oregon attended. The parent committee prepared fry bread and Indian tacos, which were sold to raise funds for the program. Students in the program are eligible for tutoring and attend weekly culture classes.“The Title VII program has taught me to value education,” said Alvia Begay, a senior at Mountain View High School. “After high school, I would like to look into studying film, theater directing or becoming a professor of Native American studies. The program has taught me about other tribes and to value other cultures.”
