Talking Points: Huskies get a top seed

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

1

Congratulations, Washington Huskies, on winning the Pac-12 Conference regular-season title.

As your reward, you are a No. 1 seed … for the National Invitational Tournament.

Huh?

Yep. No Big Dance for you, Huskies.

Instead, you get the honor of being the first team to win a major conference regular-season title and not get invited to the NCAA Tournament.

Tweeted Gregg Bell, director of writing at UW: “First time since 1954 that team with best regular-season league record in Pac12/Pac10/Pac8/PCC doesn’t make NCAA tournament.”

Said Jeff Hathaway, chairman of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Committee, put it simply: “They just didn’t have enough quality wins.”

But hey, you Huskies are in good company. The NIT is littered with Pac-12 non-quality win teams like Oregon, Arizona and Stanford.

We all saw this coming.

And now it’s here.

Is it good or bad that we know how the NCAA Tournament teams were numbered?

Kentucky as No. 1 overall wasn’t tough to figure out.

But how does No. 68 Western Kentucky feel knowing they are the bottom of the heap?

Probably a lot better than most of the Pac-12 teams that didn’t make the field.

Tony Stewart may have won Sunday’s NASCAR race at Las Vegas, but Greg Biffle has been the model of consistency.

For the third NASCAR Sprint Cup race in a row, the Vancouver driver has placed third. And three thirds adds up No. 1 … as in the top of the points standings.

Biffle acknowledged after Sunday’s race the good season he is having, giving thanks to his crew chief Matt Puccia.

It is Biffle’s first time atop the leaderboard since June 2005.
