On 03-04-12, at about 4:52 p.m. Christopher Reamer called 9-1-1 to report his thirteen-year-old son had just found what appeared to be a grenade in the ceiling rafters of his bedroom. The Reamer family rents a home in the 2100 block of SE Sparrow Street, in Milwaukie.

Mr. Reamer reported that his son, Austin, has a bedroom in the basement of the home. Austin found an unusual object tucked into a space between the rafters in the basement ceiling. After removing it, he realized the object was some kind of explosive device similar to a hand grenade. Knowing the situation could be extremely hazardous, he immediately notified his father.

Mr. Reamer carefully took the device from his son’s room and placed it in the front yard of the residence. Milwaukie Police closed portions of SE 21st Avenue and Sparrow Streets, and advised neighbors to remain indoors.

Portland’s Explosive Disposal Unit arrived and investigated the suspicious device. EDU secured the device, which was identified as a modified military training grenade. EDU removed the device and will ensure its proper disposal.

The Milwaukie Police Department recognizes that thirteen-year-old Austin properly assessed a dangerous situation and immediately reported the hazard to an adult. A less responsible teen might have tried showing it off to friends, or brought it to school with disastrous results.

Milwaukie Police are investigating the incident. Possession of a Destructive Device (ORS166.382) is a Class C Felony.
