Camas and Washougal might seem a bit sleepy, but don’t let that fool you.
There’s plenty of life in the east county towns, even at night.
Looking for a funky film or to get your culture on with some art? There’s lots to see along Fourth Avenue in downtown Camas.
How about a theater performance or some dance lessons? An evening in Washougal at the Washburn Performing Arts Center might be in order.

Events: On the first Friday of each month, the Downtown Camas Association hosts a special event designed to get people out and roaming the area’s shops and restaurants.

Events: The gallery has grown considerably since it first opened in the mid-1980s, said David Zavortink, director of the Camas Public Library.
“It started back in the old building when we put together a little space, but when we moved into our new building, the gallery really improved,” Zavortink said. “The volunteer group that runs it, they’ve installed a fantastic new lighting system and a great hanging system for the art.”
Each month, artists from the region present their work in the 400-square-foot space on the library’s second floor. Shows usually open on Camas First Fridays with an artist’s reception. Exhibits change each month.
Through March, Camas artists David and Beth Norwood are showing “For the Love of Nature,” a photography and oil painting display featuring Dave Norwood’s pictures of birds and Beth Norwood’s landscape art.
“They’ve been creating art for a long time,” Zavortink said. “This should be a great show.”
Hours: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Closed Sundays. First Fridays open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Events:Visitors to the Liberty Theatre can enjoy mixture of second-run and classic films and special showings in the venue’s 350-seat auditorium.
Showings in March include “War Horse,” “Hell and Back Again” and “The Artist.”

Events: Part of Washougal High School, the Washburn Performing Arts Center hosts school performances and brings in guest artists, lecturers and performers from around the region.
This month audiences can check out the Blue Note Cafe ’50s and ’60s-style concert at 7 p.m. March 9 or the Washougal High School Bands Concert at 7 p.m. March 22.

Events: Tucked in the back of the Town Square building in downtown Washougal, Dayley Dance Academy offers a selection of ballet, jazz, contemporary partnerings, hip-hop, tap and other classes for all levels and ages.
The academy, which has been open for a year, will also let newcomers try any class one time for free.
“It’s great entertainment and it’s physical fitness,” said Sarah Dayley, owner. “It’s one of the best things you can do for your body to get into shape.”
Members can also sign up for private instruction after 7 p.m. on Fridays.
Hours: Varies by class. Tap, hip-hop and contemporary partnering dance classes are all available after 6 p.m. during the week.
Cost: Tuition ranges from $40 for one hour a week to $240 for unlimited classes.

Events: Want an evening of exercise? There’s plenty to do at Lacamas Swim & Sport.
The facility has spin, Jazzercise and fusion classes most nights. Or if that’s not your thing, you can check out the free weights or shoot hoops in the gym.
“There are almost always basketball pickup games going,” said Ayre Shilling, membership director. “There’s lots to do. We have kind of a community center feel, even though we’re not one.”
Hours: 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.Monday-Friday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.
Cost: $15 adults, $10 kids for a day pass. Membership fees vary.
