Spelling is certainly entertaining whensix quirky adolescents compete for the spelling championship of a lifetime in “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.” This musical comedy also invites four members of the audience to compete in the spelling bee along with the six characters. The Clark College Theater Department is presenting the play.

When: 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Where: Decker Theatre, Frost Arts Center, 1933 Fort Vancouver Way, Vancouver.

The musical is among several options for getting out and about this weekend. Others include a glee concert and traditional pow wow.

2. Milkshakes and kisses

The final performances of “Bye Bye Birdie” are on tap. It’s a musical set in the era of sock hops and drive-ins. Popular singer Conrad Birdie and his songwriter Albert Peterson come up with a publicity stunt to promote the song “One Last Kiss” before the singer is drafted into the Army. Birdie will give a “last kiss” to a lucky girl on television, but the publicity stunt goes comically wrong for everyone involved. The play is presented by Christian Youth Theater.

When: 3 and 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Where: Washburn Performing Arts Center, 1201 39th St., Washougal.

Admission: $14, $11 for youth and seniors.

3. Sounds of glee

All the way from the University of Virginia, the Virginia Glee Club, one of the top collegiate men’s choruses in the country, makes a stop at Union High School during the club’s West Coast tour. The group, which says it is in its 141st year, will perform a wide array of classics, folk and spiritual songs with the Union High School Select Men’s Ensemble and Portland State University’s Man Choir.

When: 4 p.m. Sunday.

Where: Union High School, 6201 N.W. Friberg-Strunk St., Camas.

Admission: $5.

4. Dance with drum beats

The public is invited to share in a celebration of American Indian dance and culture with singing, dancing, arts, food and crafts at the annual traditional powwow. There will be grand entries at 1 and 6 p.m. Native American dancers will perform in various dance styles to the beat of drum groups from throughout the Northwest. The event is hosted by the American Indian Education Program and the Evergreen, Vancouver and Battle Ground school districts.

When: Noon to 10 p.m. Saturday.

Where: Covington Middle School, 11200 N.E. Rosewood Road, Vancouver.

Admission: Free.
