Multnomah Falls trail detour opens Saturday

Clark County residents who are planning to visit Multnomah Falls this summer should be prepared for a hike.

Last spring a landslide removed part of the trail to the highest viewing deck platform overlooking the falls. The damaged trail has been closed, but a temporary trail allowing visitors to access the overlook will open Saturday.

The old trail was paved and allowed for wheelchairs and strollers to access the overlook of the popular waterfall. The temporary trail is not paved and will be suitable only for hikers wearing appropriate walking shoes.

Wheelchairs and strollers can still access the trail to the lower overlook, but they will not be able to climb up to the higher overlook.

Multnomah Falls, the second-highest year-round waterfalls in the nation, is one of the most-visited tourist spots in the Vancouver-Portland metro area.

Planning for a permanent trail reroute will occur this fall. For details, visit Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.
