Fire damages manufactured home in Camas

Fire damaged a manufactured home Saturday afternoon at the Oak Meadows Mobile Home Park in Camas, according to East County Fire & Rescue.

The fire was reported at 5:20 p.m. at 26801 N.E. Ninth St., Unit 53, said ECF&R Chief Scott Koehler. He said a neighbor saw smoke and, after calling 911, used a garden hose to try to contain the fire until crews arrived.

Firefighters based at a station just across Highway 500 saw the smoke as they opened the station doors and were on scene within a minute, Koehler said. They were able to contain the fire to the home’s living room in less than five minutes, though there was smoke damage throughout the residence.

Firefighters searched the building after learning there might have been someone at home, Koehler said, but they found no one there and no pets. No injuries were reported.

Koehler said the fire offered a good reminder to install and maintain smoke detectors, especially in manufactured homes, which offer less resistance to fire than other types of construction.

“We’re lucky this wasn’t a bigger fire,” Koehler said. “If this had happened at night, the only warning would have come from a smoke detector.”

A damage estimate and cause wasn’t available. The Clark County Fire Marshal was on scene investigating.

Firefighters from Camas and Washougal assisted, Koehler said.

The home’s owners are Nathanial and Lorraine Humphries, according to county property records.
