I chuckled Saturday afternoon over a cartoon in my Facebook news feed. It said, “Summer in Oregon always begins on July 5th. Always has. Always will. Be patient. It’s coming.” Being just across the river from the Beaver State, that old saying generally holds true for us. Of course, there will always be some who complain but I rather enjoy a few interludes of rain. It sounds so nice at night and freshens the air.
To the north, the day slips a few, to maybe July 10 in Seattle. But Pacific Northwest summers are hard to beat.
Of course Saturday did not seem like summer, with moderate rain early in the day and even a quick coating of snow in the Cascade passes.
From midnight to 5 p.m. Saturday, I recorded 23 of an inch of rain bringing my monthly total to 3 inches. The official total for Vancouver at Pearson field was 0.53 of an inch. Rainfall was heavier the farther south you went; the Portland airport, usually the driest location, had 0.79 of an inch. Afternoon temperatures struggled but with a sunshine between 4 and 5 p.m., Vancouver had a high of 64 degrees.
