What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

Congratulations are in order.
Not only for the winners of today’s Vancouver USA Marathon, but for the ambitions of everyone involved.
The commitment involved to prepare to run either 13.1 or 26.2 miles means everyone at the starting line this morning deserves a pat on the back.
We also applaud the ambition of Brian Davis and his Energy Events crew, which hopes to build the VUM into a destination race. This is only its second year, so it will take some time before the marathon is a Vancouver tradition. But an event that strives to put Vancouver USA on the sports map is a grand idea.

Time was, Father’s Day was a big sports days in these parts.
Between 1984 and 2007, the biggest names in auto racing came to Portland International Raceway on the third weekend of June, providing the region with some thrilling finishes and a chance to revel a big-time event.
That race has gone the way of its longtime sponsor, G.I. Joe’s. We miss the buzz that came with having racing legends compete in our backyard.
But for those in search of speed, there is racing at PIR today. The 52nd edition of the Rose Cup Race will unfold this afternoon, the culmination of a weekend of racing that featured hundreds of Sports Car Club of America racers.

With the Mariners’ offense missing on their current home stand — Saturday’s two-run first inning was the first time in more than a week that Seattle had a lead — there is increased chatter about moving in the outfield fences at Safeco Field.
One argument suggests that making the place more home run friendly will help the team score runs without needing to string together a bunch of hits. Shorter fences might also boost the confidence of hitters if they know that quality contact will be rewarded.
Perhaps, too, it can be argued that a cozier park will appeal to more fans. Figure that lagging attendance be the real motivation for any change in dimensions at Safeco.
Of course, there is another solution to the M’s offensive troubles: find a few more hitters.
