Try This: Bountiful fun at Woodland’s Planters Days

Celebrating 90 years, Woodland Planters Days dishes out the fun. Today’s highlights include the grand parade at 11 a.m. along Davidson Avenue. The firemen’s barbecue starts at noon at Horseshoe Lake Park, followed by the 45th annual frog jump, with the Saturday Market, remote-control hydroplane races and the carnival in full swing all day. The 10th annual bed races are at 4 p.m. and the Catillacs are in concert from 8 to 11 p.m. On Sunday, the streets will fill with classic cars for the car show and a 4×4 Show & Shine.

When: 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday; 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Beer for the dads

Just in time for Father’s Day weekend, the Who’s Your Daddy? Beer Festival presented by Riverview Bank will offer a selection of speciality beers made in Washington, including those from Salmon Creek and Mt. Tabor breweries. Festivities include a tinfoil hat contest, with the proceeds benefiting CDM Long-Term Care Services. Admission includes a commemorative tasting glass and six beer tokens.

Familiar favorites

Grammy-nominated violinist Jenny Oaks Baker will perform with the Portland Ensign Choir and Orchestra for a night of music inspired by classic Hollywood movies. For seven years, Baker performed as a first violinist in the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. Her newest album, “Wish Upon a Star: a Tribute to the Music of Walt Disney,” offers Disney favorites adapted for the violin.

A serious endurance test

Held for the first time in the Pacific Northwest, the Spartan Race, an international endurance course, will challenge competitors with more than 15 obstacles built around water, mud and fire. With more than 4,000 participants expected to race, spectators can watch from the sidelines, enjoy live music and cheer on competitors. At noon, children can participate in the Jr. Spartan Adventure Race, which is filled with games and children’s challenges with a half-mile course for ages 4-9 and a 1-mile course for ages 10-12. Proceeds benefit the Kids Fit Foundation.

Return to the ’80s in’Rock of Ages’

Small-town girl Sherrie Christian (Julianne Hough) heads to Los Angeles in 1987 to pursue her rock ‘n’ roll dreams. She meets city boy Drew (Diego Boneta), an aspiring rocker who helps her get a job at the Bourbon Room, which is on the verge of bankruptcy. But they hope to save the place with an appearance by the legendary rocker Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise). “Rock of Ages” is rated PG-13.
