A pair of Clark County wrestlers were part of the Washington state team that finished in the top four in two national tournaments held last week at Indianapolis.
Dallas Goodpaster went 10-0 in the 210-pound weight division to help Washington finish second in the Greco-Roman tournament as part of the National Schoolboy Duals, a tournament featuring top seventh- and eighth-grade wrestlers. Tommy Strassenberg, wrestling at 112 pounds, went 8-2 and lost in the finals of the Greco-Roman tournament.
The Washington team lost to Illinois in the Greco-Roman championship dual meet.
In the freestyle tournament, Washington finished fourth. Goodpaster went 9-1 in that tournament. Strassenberg did not wrestle the freestyle tournament because of a back injury.Goodpaster and Strassenberg were selected to Washington’s team after winning middle school age division state titles in each of three styles: collegiate, Greco-Roman and freestyle.
Discus record set
Bailey King of Vancouver bettered a 20-year-old regional youth discus record on Saturday.
A throw of 164 feet, 11 inches at a throwers meet in Portland was 10 feet farther than the listed Pacific Northwest Association record for boys who were born in 1998 and 1999. The Pacific Northwest Association is the U.S. Track and Field organization for western Washington.
That mark came during The Rose Festival throwers meet staged by Mac Wilkins. Earlier on Saturday, King won the shot put (46-4) and discus (150-5) during the Northwest Club Championships. Both meets were held at Concordia University in Portland.
King is an eighth-grader at Pacific Middle School and was competing for Vancouver’s Evergreen Storm Track Club.Also on Saturday, three Evergreen Storm middle school runners competed in the Portland Track Festival. Miguel DeLaMena finished fourth in the boys mile race with a time of 4:57.99, In the girls 1,500 meters, Cassie McKinney took fifth place (4:56.54) and Savannah Craig finished 10th (5:10.13).
Youth golfer wins tourney
Vancouver youth golfer Spencer Tibbits won the championship for boys ages 12-13 at the Centennial Junior in Medford, Ore.
Closing with a 6-under-par 66 on Sunday, Tibbits won the 36-hole tournament by 13 strokes with a 9-under 135 over two days at Centennial Golf Club. The tournament was an Oregon Golf Association junior event.
Tibbits had birdies on seven of the 18 holes on Sunday, a personal best in tournament play for the 13-year-old. Benjamin Gruher of Camas finished third in that age division at 7-over 151.Brian Humphreys of Washougal finished second in the boys open division of the tournament.
VLC rowers 10th at nationals
Dorothy Tarnawski and Katie Hickey of Vancouver Lake Crew finished fifth in their B final on Sunday at the U.S. Rowing Junior National Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
Competing in the women’s lightweight doubles, they finished the 2,000-meter race in 8 minutes, 15.552 seconds, making them essentially the 10th best boat in the nation.
The Columbia River High School students qualified for the nationals in May during regional competition at Vancouver Lake.The nationals included two heat races on Friday and a semifinal on Saturday. The results from those placed Tarnawski and Hickey in the B final. The top six boats raced in the A final. Since one of those six boats were disqualified, the VLC team was 10th best on the final day.
Local among lacrosse all-stars
The Evergreen Lacrosse Club’s Madeline McKinnon has been selected for the Washington under-15 girls lacrosse team, and will represent the state at the U.S. Lacrosse U-15 National Championships.
McKinnon, a freshman at Union High School, was one of four Evergreen Lacrosse Club players to receive All-Conference honors at the end of this season. Her 22 goals were good for seventh in the conference, and she led the Nisqually Conference with 45 faceoff wins.
According to ELC assistant coach Tod Pickett, McKinnon is the first player from outside of the Seattle area chosen to represent Washington at a U.S. Lacrosse sanctioned competition. The state team is one of 32 select squads that will compete for the national title. The tournament will be held July 24-26 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
