Try This: Parade hits the right notes

The Portland Rose Festival reaches its apex Saturday with the 100th Grand Floral Parade. This year’s parade will include 14 colorful floats incorporating the festival’s theme, Rock ‘n’ Roses. Ninety other parade entries, from marching bands, including Heritage and Battle Ground high school bands, to llamas and vintage automobiles will hit the parade route. The parade will also be televised on Fox 12 from 6 a.m. to noon.

When: 10 a.m. Saturday.

Where: Starts at Veterans Memorial Coliseum, 300 N. Winning St., heads through downtown Portland across the Burnside Bridge, along Southwest Fourth Avenue to Southwest Taylor Street.

Admission: Reserved indoor and outdoor seating is available from $15-$30

The Grand Floral Parade is one of many options for getting out and about this weekend. Others include National Get Outdoors Day and a youth festival.

2. Find a gift and benefit museum

The Clark County Historical Museum will stage a unique benefit sale with autographed sports and celebrity memorabilia from the collection of Ron Zollo, with half of the proceeds going to the museum. Zollo, a former assistant general manager of the Tacoma Rainiers Pacific Coast League baseball franchise, has been collecting celebrity autographs for more than 30 years. Also enjoy the museum’s current exhibits: “Above & Below the Fold: News Fit to Print” and “Mapping Clark County.”

3. Get outdoors

The fourth-annual National Get Outdoors Day encourages family activities in open space at the Fort Vancouver National Site. Scale a climbing wall and test archery and disc golf skills on courses. Event highlights include Oregon Zoo Live Animals, information booths and photographs with Smokey Bear and friends. Explore Pearson Air Museum, which will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Silas Christofferson’s 1912 flight off the roof of a Portland hotel, along with the recreated 1840s fur trapping camp and historic weapons demonstrations at the fort.

When: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday

Where: Fort Vancouver National Site, 1501 E. Evergreen Blvd., Vancouver.

Admission: Free; Pearson admission: $7; $5 for seniors, active military members and students 6-17; free for 5 and younger; $22 for families.

4. The power of youth

The 11th-annual Camtown Youth Festival, hosted by Camas Parks and Recreation and the Camas School District, will offer children ages 3 to 16 a variety of activities, including carnival games, arts and crafts, face painting, an art show, a petting zoo and a chance to participate in the Kids Flea Market. There is a $4 fee for booth registration.

5. ‘Madagascar 3’ a circus of laughs

Alex the Lion (voiced by Ben Stiller), Marty the Zebra (Chris Rock), Gloria the Hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith) and Melman the Giraffe (David Schwimmer) are still fighting to get back to their beloved Central Park Zoo. Their journey takes them to Europe, where they stumble on the perfect cover: a traveling circus that ends up spreading the animal’s brand of comedic mayhem across the continent. “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted” is rated PG.
