What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:
The top three players in the world are grouped together for the opening two rounds of the U.S. Open next week.
Funny thing is, they might not play in front of too big of a gallery.
That’s because arguably the three most popular, or famous, or infamous, players in the game today are in another grouping and will attract most of the attention.
Tiger Woods will play with Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson.
Luke Donald, No. 1 in the world rankings, will play along with Rory McIlroy, No. 2, and Lee Westwood, No. 3.
Yeah, ho hum compared to Lefty, Bubba, and Tiger.
By the way, the top-three ranked players in the world have combined to win one major. Woods, Mickelson, and Watson have 19.
We know who we will be watching.
Oh, and we’re not the only ones who appreciate the USGA’s groupings.
Fark.com says the reason for the Lefty, Tiger, Bubba grouping is so ESPN does not even have to pretend to care about anyone else playing those days.
One of Washington’s newspapers made national headlines Thursday because of one of its headlines.
The Tri-City Herald came up with this:
“Sonics advance to finals, oh wait”
If that did not drive home the point enough for readers to remember that the Oklahoma City Thunder used to play in Washington, the subhead hit people over the head:
“Oklahoma City steals team, and steals game from San Antonio”
Does the Star Tribune in Minneapolis still do this when the Los Angeles Lakers win big games?
There has been talk that the Seattle Mariners might bring the fences closer to home plate next year. Safeco Park is pitcher friendly, but that does not necessarily mean fan friendly.
If the fences are to come in, we hope the Mariners go all out with this. Bring them in 40, 50, or 60 feet. Let’s turn every Safeco game into slo-pitch softball.
Remember, chicks dig the long ball.
Who cares if every game takes 4 hours and 30 minutes? We want 13-12 finals.
