Triton Pitassi of Camas won the state hammer throw championship for high school boys.
The Camas High School junior threw the 12-pound hammer 191 feet and 4 inches to win the competition held on May 27 in Centralia. His mark was three inches better than Andy Miller of Olympia.
The hammer throw is not a sanctioned event for the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association championships.
Pitassi’s best mark this season is 193-2, which is ranked fifth nationally.
Also competing for Camas were senior Jordan Mazi (10th place, 135-9) and freshman Wesley Gilge (14th, 99-10).
In the girls meet, Rachel Martschinske of Camas took fifth with a mark of 118-5. Girls throw a hammer that weighs 4 kilograms.
CrossFit club advances
For the third year in a row, a team from CrossFit Fort Vancouver will compete at the International CrossFit Games.
By finishing second among 29 teams at the CrossFit Northwest Regionals, the Vancouver gym qualified for the world championship of the competition.
In 2010, CrossFit Fort Vancouver won the world championship. In 2011 the team placed fourth in the world. The 2012 games are scheduled for July at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
Three teams from each of 17 regions around the world will gather for the international championships.
CrossFit Fort Vancouver team members are Jessica Core, Nathan Loren, Adam Neiffer, Paul Richie, Erin Taylor, and Jennifer Wills.
The CrossFit Games involve a variety of tests of strength and endurance.In the regionals, a team from a Springfield, Ore., CrossFit gym finished first.
Camas runner second in Newport Marathon
Amy Cooper of Camas was the second woman to finish Saturday’s Newport Marathon in Newport, Ore.
She finished one second after the three-hour mark, and 1:19 behind winner Erica Schramm. Cooper was 20th overall among 731 finishers.
Cooper, then Amy Bair, was a track and cross country competitor at Mountain View High School from 1996-1999. She also ran for Brigham Young University.
Local boy wins golf event
Spencer Tibbits of Vancouver won his age division at the Pacific Northwest Junior PGA Championship on Sunday at a Tumwater Valley Golf Club.
Tibbits, 13, shot a 4-under-par 68 on the second day of the 36-hole tournament to win the boys 13-15 age group by three strokes over Casey Scott of Canby, Ore. Tibbits’ two-day total was 3-under 141.
Two weeks earlier, Tibbits won the 12-13 age division title at the Springfield Junior in Springfield, Ore.
