Try This: Get outside for some fun

School doesn’t need to be in session for a field trip, thanks to the Columbia Springs Environmental Education Center. Explore the nature trails, woodlands and wetlands at the historic Vancouver Trout Hatchery, as well as hand-on learning stations, craft projects and hikes during Family Field Trip Day.

LEGO-mania

Join local hobbyists for Bricks Cascade 2012, an exhibit of thousands of LEGO creations built by adult enthusiasts and young builders. Chat with the people who build with the plastic bricks or visit with vendors selling everything from custom-made elements to vintage LEGO sets.

Slice of life on stage

Curtains will rise again for “Steel Magnolias,” presented by the Serendipity Players. The story follows six Southern women who gather at Truvy’s beauty parlor to talk about life’s ups and downs. Based on the stage play written by Robert Harling, the production stars Jack Wells, Alicia Turvin, Joni Moore, Emily Wells, Dalene Young and Fayra Teeters.

Fire station fun

Fire District 6 opens up the fire house to the neighbors for a family fun day featuring demonstrations of technical rescue tools, car extractions, K-9 units and more. Visitors also can participate in a fire safety smoke house, check out the fire engines and take the junior firefighter challenge. Free hot dogs, chips and other refreshments will be available.

A darker shade of ‘Snow White’

Queen Ravenna (Charlize Theron) takes control of the kingdom after killing her new husband and locking away her stepdaughter, Snow White (Kristen Stewart).
