Trevor Hayward was a repeat winner of the Girlfriend and Dudes Triathlon.
The 42-year-old Vancouver resident was a few seconds slower than in 2011, but won Sunday’s race at Frenchman’s Bar by nearly three minutes. The race involved swimming 1.5 miles in the Columbia River, biking 12.5 miles, then finishing with a 3.1-mile run. Hayward completed the task in 1 hour, 3 minutes and 26 seconds.
Ricky Frasier of Vancouver finished second in 1:07:15, and Scott Mcbeth of Vancouver third in 1:07:29.
Remy Maguire of Vancouver was the women’s champion. The 32-year-old placed 10th overall in 1:10:14. Maguire is a trainer for Northwest Personal Fitness, which has staged this event for four years with the help of many sponsors.
A total of 146 women and 115 men finished the race. Another 18 did one leg of it for one of the six relay teams.
All of the first-time triathletes who entered made it to the finish line, according to race organizer Sherri McMillan. She noted that more than 60 children did the kids triathlon that preceded the main event.
The oldest participant, 72-year-old Jim Vitale of Sandy, Ore., finished the race with a time of 2:11:44.The event raised more than $3,000 for the Children’s Center, which provides mental health care for children and families in Clark County.
Area swimmers win state titles
Four members of Columbia River Swim Team won state titles during the Oregon Swimming long course championship meets.
Tommy Beale, won three events against other 9-year-old boys at the 10 and younger championship meet. His wins were in the 50-meter breaststroke (46.63 seconds), 100-meter breaststroke (1:42.60) and 200 individual medley (3:13.06). The 10-and-younger long-course state meet was held July 14-15 in Beaverton.
The 11-and-older long-course championships took place July 19-22 in Gresham. Julia Sanders won two races in the girls 15-and-older division. Sanders won the 100-meter backstroke (1:05.78) and the 200 individual medley (2:22.91). Meileen Yee won the 11-year-old girls 100 breaststroke (1:28.97). Jaron Hamlik won the boys 15-and-older 100 backstroke (1:01.08).
Vancouver rider at motocross nationals
Michael Smith of Vancouver is one of nearly 1,400 amateur motocross racers who qualified to race in the 29th AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships.
Racing in a variety of classifications began on Sunday and runs for seven days at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Tennessee.
A veteran of more than 25 years racing at Washougal MX Park, Smith will be racing other riders 30 and older in the veteran B/C classification. According to the AMA, more than 20,000 amateur motocross racers competed for less than 2,000 spots in the national championships.

Three basketball camps for youths are scheduled for Aug. 6-9 in Vancouver.
