Visitors looking for firehouse chili will find the fourth annual Fire in the Park to their tastes. The event pits local restaurants and fire stations in a chili cook-off, with favorite recipes being picked by voters, with the proceeds benefiting the nonprofit Share. The event also includes the Firefighters Competition, a children’s activity area, fire equipment displays and musical performances including firefighter pipe and drum bands.

When: Noon to 9 p.m. Saturday, July 21.

Where: Esther Short Park, Sixth and Esther streets, Vancouver.

Admission: Free, $1 for chili tasting.

Fire in the Park is one of many options for getting out and about this weekend. Others include a car cruise and a vintage baseball game.

Battle Ground on parade

Battle Ground celebrates its community with the annual Harvest Days. Events Saturday, July 21 open with the Fred Meyer Grand Parade at 10 a.m., with the Family Fun Arena, musical performances, children’s activities, talent show, beer and wine garden, and outdoor markets open throughout the weekend.

When: 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Saturday, July 21 and 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Where: Battle Ground Community Center/Fairgrounds Park, 912 E. Main St., Battle Ground.

Admission: $2, $5 for families.

Car culture

Classic cars, hot rods and custom automobiles are invited to Cruisin’ the Gut, with 22 blocks designated for old-time cruising along Main Street in downtown Vancouver. The proceeds and food donations will benefit Share’s programs. On the corner of 12th and Main streets, visitors can check out dragsters and high-compression hot rods.

When: Noon to 11 p.m. Saturday, July 21.

Where: Main Street, from 28th Street to Sixth Street, Vancouver.

Admission: Free, but three cans of nonperishable food is suggested.

Vintage swings

The annual 1860s Vintage Base Ball game offers fun for sports and history fans alike. Staff and volunteers will re-create 1860s “base ball” game on the Parade Grounds, as the Vancouver Town Team takes on the First Oregon Volunteers. Dressed in period uniforms, the two teams will play the gloveless game to celebrate the 145th anniversary of organized baseball in Vancouver. The event includes a pregame concert by the Whiskey Flats Brass Band, croquet course and a demonstration of historic weapons.

When: 5:30 p.m. Saturday, July 21, with the base ball game starting at 6 p.m.

Where: Parade Grounds along Officers Row, 1501 E. Evergreen Blvd., Vancouver.

Admission: Free, lawn chairs, blankets and picnics are encouraged.

Trilogy concludes in ‘Dark Knight Rises’

Eight years have passed since Batman disappeared from Gotham City. Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) has become reclusive, while Commissioner Gordon enforces the anti-crime Dent Act. But the arrival of mysterious cat burglar Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway) and the dangerous mercenary known as Bane (Tom Hardy) calls out the Dark Knight once again. “Dark Knight Rises” is rated PG-13.
