Shumway — After her sister died of cancer, Ann Pohrman wanted to do something to help fight the disease, so she started volunteering for the American Cancer Society in 1961. When Barbara Marshall wanted to open an American Cancer Society Discovery Shop, Pohrman found the Uptown Village site at 2011 Main St. The shop opened Aug. 4, 1974, and is still operating in the same location. Fifty years later Pohrman, 97, is still volunteering for the American Cancer Society. She volunteers at the shop two days a week.
