A crew from Ballard Diving and Salvage’s Vancouver site will begin removing a derelict dock from Japan at Agate Beach, Ore., on July 31, the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department said Tuesday.
The project will take three to seven days depending on tide and safety needs, the state agency said. The beach will remain open to the public during the work, except for a closed safety zone around the dock demolition site.
The 66-foot-long, 19-foot-wide, 7-foot-tall dock washed ashore early the morning of June 5, and is believed to weigh 130-165 tons. It originated from the Japanese port city of Misawa and was carried out to sea during the tsunami that followed Japan’s devastating March 11 earthquake.
Ballard was awarded a contract for $84,155 to complete the work. The firm is a global diving, marine construction and salvage company based in Seattle with operations in Vancouver.
