The ninth Lacamas Lake Half Marathon and 4-miler will take place Sunday in Camas.
Participants have the option of running or walking either 13.1 miles or 4 miles, with each race starting and finishing at Camas High School.
The half marathon run will begin at 7:35 a.m. Half marathon walkers start five minutes later, with four hours to finish. The start for the 4-miler is 8:30 a.m.
There is a kids 1-kilometer race at 10 a.m., followed by awards at about 10:15 a.m.
Online registration has closed. Registration closes at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Fit Right NW running stores, including the outlet in east Vancouver at 700 SE 160th Ave., Ste. 111. There is no registration on Sunday. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, in-person registration can be completed at Fit Right NW in Vancouver.
Fit Right NW stages this event, which will limit vehicle traffic on several Camas area streets on Sunday morning. Both races will follow Southeast Everett Street between Northeast 35th Avenue and Northeast 43rd. Also, the south/eastbound lane of Leadbetter and the eastbound lane of Goodwin Road will be closed 7-11 a.m. for all vehicle traffic.Course and traffic details can be found online at www.lacamaslakerunwalk.com.
Sponsor aids youth soccer club
Directors Mortgage is now the official sponsor for the Vancouver Timbers youth soccer club.
The soccer club recently announced that its 144 advanced competition teams will wear the Directors Mortgage name and logo on their uniforms.
“We are proud to be in partnership with a local business, Directors Mortgage. And even more excited about the opportunities this relationship will create,” Vancouver Timbers president David Hughes said.
Details of the sponsorship agreement were not made public.
As part of the agreement, the club will list Directors Mortgage as the title sponsor of their two largest tournaments, the Directors Mortgage Summer Slam and the Directors Mortgage Stew Beck College Showcase.
The sponsorship agreement is the latest significant change for the Vancouver club. In the spring, the club was one of four in the metro area selected by the Portland Timbers to be a member of the Adidas Timbers Alliance. Shortly after that announcement, the club approved a merger with the Camas-Washougal Soccer Club and its advanced-competition wing.
“This sponsorship couldn’t have come at a better time,” Vancouver Timbers fundraising coordinator Steve Bowmer said. Bowmer is spearheading the club’s $2 million field improvement project at the Harmony Sports Complex.
Disc golf event draws 99
Portlanders Matthew Owens and Erin Reichel won the advanced division championships during the Bad Monkey Invitational disc golf tournament on July 7-8 at Leverich Park in Vancouver.
A total of 99 players from around the region participated in the tournament, which was held for the fourth year in a row at Leverich Park.
The winner of the novice division was Rob Sumrall of Vancouver. Recreational Division winner Nathan Silva of Beaverton was playing in his first tournament. Ryan Tech of Vancouver took first in the men’s intermediate division with one of the four best scores overall. Mindy Carbajal of Kings Beach, Calif., won the women’s intermediate division.
Jeff Elliott of Vancouver won among players 50 and older. Stuart Hicks of Beaverton won the 40-and-older division.The tournament was a B-level Professional Disc Golf Association event and included $3,000 in gift certificate prizes. That included three $85 prizes for aces by Jason McGrew, Brad Smethers and Jeremy Sines.
Special Olympians collect gold
Clark County participants won 69 gold medals during the Special Olympics of Washington Summer State Games, which were held in early June at Joint Base Lewis McChord.
Including athletes and the Unified Partners who support competitors, there were 134 Clark County participants in the state championships. In addition to the gold medals, Clark County teams and individuals collected 58 silver medals, and 49 bronze medals. Clark County participants also earned ribbons for placing fourth (29), fifth (27), sixth (14), seventh (15), eighth (six) and ninth (one).
The Dolphins Aquatics swim team collected 26 gold medals, 16 silver medals and 23 bronze medals.
In track and field, the Flying Eagles collected 29 gold medals, 27 silver medals and 18 bronze medals.
In cycling, the Dragon Flies won nine gold medals, 11 silver medals and six bronze .
The Bulldogs power lifting team won five gold medals, four silver medals and one bronze medal.
Four soccer teams from Clark County participated in the state tournament. The Bulldogs won the bronze medal in the Master 1 Unified division. The Vancouver Blues placed fourth in the Masters 6 tournament. The Mustangs placed fifth in the Masters 7 tournament. The Cougars placed fifth in the Senior 1 Unified tournament.
Corral, Raivio host camps
Two former college basketball standouts from Clark County are holding clinics for area youths in early August.
The Derek Raivio Boys Basketball Camp is scheduled Aug. 6-9 at Mountain View High School. Raivio is a Mountain View graduate who played college basketball for Gonzaga.
