A 78-year-old man was sent to the hospital with chest pain after falling asleep and hitting a semi on Interstate 5 on Monday morning, Washington State Patrol said.
The crash happened just before 8 a.m. on I-5, about a mile south of Woodland, a state patrol memo said.
William G. Freske, 78, of Bow was driving north on I-5 in a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta. He fell asleep in the center lane, veered to the right and hit the rear of a semi driven by Robert B. Nicklason, 51, of Azalea, Ore. Freske’s car continued and hit a guardrail, state patrol said.
Freske was sent to Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center.
Nicklason and his passenger, Dana S. Nicklason, 50, were uninjured.
Freske was cited for second-degree negligent driving.
