Local ball: Jayhawks advance to Senior Babe Ruth regional

The Vancouver Jayhawks have earned a spot in the Senior Babe Ruth regionals.

The Jayhawks defeated host Camas-Washougal Granite 8-4 on Saturday in the winner’s bracket semifinal of the Southern Washington Senior Babe Ruth Tournament at Louis Bloch Park in Camas.

The victory qualified the Jayhawks for the Pacific Northwest Regional beginning Thursday at Kent.

Zach Smith was 3 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI, and Will Pecson hit a home run in the Jayhawks’ win.

They will play for the tournament title at 2 p.m. today. If they were to lose in that game, a second championship game would be played on Monday.

The Vancouver Redbirds kept marching though the loser’s bracket, eliminating Kennewick 10-0.

However, the Redbirds’ season ended with a 6-5 loss to Hamer Electric of Longview

Camas-Washougal will play the Longview team at 11 a.m. today for the second berth to regionals and the right to play the Jayhawks for the tournament title.

Curt Daniels Invitational — The final four of the 12-team tournament, held in Vancouver and Portland, was settled Saturday.

The Seattle Stars play Taylor Baseball at 10 a.m. today, followed by Portland Baseball Club vs. Lakeside Recovery at 1 p.m.

The championship game is scheduled for 4 p.m.

All three games will be played at the University of Portland.

The Vancouver Cardinals were 2-1-1 going into their final game against the Bay Area Warriors on Saturday night. Results were not available at press time.
