AA 1988 Volkswagen Fox caught fire Friday afternoon along Washougal River Road.

The owner had left the vehicle along the road near Milepost 6 because of car troubles, said East County Fire & Rescue Chief Scott Koehler.

After a friend dropped her off and left, the owner started the car; the engine died. When she pushed it to the side of the road, she saw smoke coming from underneath the car.

By the time two engines and a water tender from East County Fire and Rescue arrived, the car was in flames. The road was closed for about 15 minutes while the firefighters got the fire under control and then opened one lane of traffic. The car was totaled.
