The Clark County Sheriff’s Office on Monday identified the man who hanged himself in the county jail on Sunday morning as Shawn Rahier, 42.
Rahier had been in jail since Saturday and was waiting to make his initial court appearance. He had been arrested in relation to domestic violence, sheriff’s Sgt. Duncan Hoss said.
According to a sheriff’s office news release, custody officers were serving lunch when they noticed an inmate was missing from a cell pod. Another inmate was asked to check the pod’s shared shower area. He found Rahier hanging in a shower stall, the release said.
Attempts to revive the man were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at 11:56 a.m.
Detectives from the Major Crimes Unit are investigating the case.
A county report earlier this year noted there were 18 suicide attempts in 2011 in the jail; one inmate died.
