A fire that appeared to have started in the attic caused significant damage to a west Hazel Dell house Tuesday afternoon.
The fire was reported at 1:51 p.m. at 801 N.W. 79th St., a quiet residential street southeast of Jason Lee Middle School.
Clark County Fire District 6 firefighters arrived to find heavy brown and white smoke coming from both ends of the L-shaped ranch-style house, said Assistant Chief Dave Taylor.
Three District 6 engine companies attacked the fire, assisted by an engine and a truck company from the Vancouver Fire Department.
The fire was initially difficult to reach. It was burning toward the middle of the house, and the roof was weakened by the blaze. So firefighters attacked the fire from the ground, pulling down several ceilings to reach the attic.
The fire was declared under control in about 25 minutes.
Taylor said no one was home at the time the fire was reported. County property records show the ranch-style house, built in 1958, is owned by Victor Von Fumetti Jr.
According to Columbian records, Vic Fumetti died June 23 at age 83. His wife, Bettye, died in 2004. The couple had lived at the home for many years.
The house sustained significant damage to the roof and attic, and its interior was damaged by smoke and the remains of the pulled-down ceilings and blown-in attic insulation. A damage estimate had not been determined Tuesday.
The Clark County Fire Marshal was called to investigate and will attempt to determine the cause.
No one was reported injured.
