Rachel Charbonneau, a teacher at Tukes Valley Middle School in Battle Ground, has been named the Mentor Teacher of the Year by the teacher-training program at University of Phoenix’ Oregon campus.
Charbonneau will receive $500 to be used at the middle school.
Charbonneau was nominated last fall by then-student teacher Kamicia Miller. The recognition awards Charbonneau’s commitment to guiding and encouraging student teachers.
“Student teaching can be challenging, and people just entering this profession need strong mentors to help ensure the teacher-in-training is successful,” said Robert Hamm, head of the University of Phoenix College of Education in Oregon.
“Rachel… taught me by counsel and by example what the art and science of teaching is all about,” Miller said. “Rachel was always very positive with her students and she manages her classroom with fairness and respect. I could not have asked for a more encouraging, supportive mentor teacher.”
