Talking Points: Super Bowl = QB greatness?

One completion on 25 attempts in a 3-0 win. That’ll be enough. So will 2 for 30 with four interceptions in a 7-3 victory where the defense scored the touchdown.

In the minds of so many, including the sport’s “experts,” Tom Brady winning will make him the greatest quarterback of all time regardless of his performance Sunday.

For some reason, the number of rings a QB attains seems to be all that matters in defining his greatness. There have been columns written that Eli Manning will surpass his brother in the “greatness” rating if he picks up his second title this weekend.

You don’t see running backs or linebackers held to that same standard — but for some reason, the other 21 players’ effort becomes irrelevant when evaluating a quarterback.

If the Patriots win, all many will see is “Four rings, five trips to the Super Bowl — that’s a better resume than Montana.” And if Brady goes 21 for 25 with four touchdowns, then labeling the best ever may be warranted. Just make sure that when judging him, you look at what he did with his arm, not what he wears on his finger.

The latest diagnosis on Penguins star Sidney Crosby is that his concussion-like symptoms are actually the result of a soft-tissue injury in his neck. This potentially good news, as such a condition is easier to treat than a bevy of concussions themselves.

Let’s hope for the sake of hockey, and this Pittsburgh franchise, that this gets Crosby back to the ice.

Penguin fans were already robbed of several brilliant years because of Mario Lemiuex’s back problems. He was a player whose talent Wayne Gretzky admittedly envied. It’s not fair to the city or followers of the sport in general to miss out on the exploits of another peerless star.

Here’s hoping that Crosby’s injuries are put on ice.
