Isaiah Smith scored 28 points and pulled down eight rebounds in helping the Chieftains clinch at least a share of the Class 3A Greater St. Helens League boys basketball championship.

River finished the regular season with an 11-1 league record. Mountain View (currently 9-1) can tie for the title with wins today against Prairie and Friday against Camas.

Should the Thunder and Chieftains tie for the league title, a tie-breaker game will be played. That game probably will be held on Feb. 6.

If River (17-3 overall) winds up winning the outright league title, the Chieftains will be idle until the district championship game on Feb. 10.

On Monday, River gradually built a lead.

“Everyone played solid for us,” River coach David Long said.

Eight players scored for the Chieftains. In addition to Smith’s big game, Rian Bassett scored 18 points, and Mack Stromme made all five of his shots to score 10.

Stromme also had eight rebounds. Devin Bolds contributed eight assists and five steals.

For Fort Vancouver (7-11, 3-8), Mario Eyler had 11 points and Deonte Hawkins scored 10.
