A 14-year-old La Center boy who collapsed during basketball practice two days earlier remained in critical condition Thursday, hospital officials said.

Cody Sherrell was participating in La Center Middle School’s first basketball practice of the season when he suffered sudden cardiac arrest, doctors said. Sherrell, an eighth-grader, is being treated at Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel in Portland.

The La Center School District has planned a press conference for 2:10 p.m. Thursday. Basketball coach Tom Rice is expected to speak to the media. Rice performed CPR on Sherrell prior to EMS responders’ arrival, school district officials said.
