Shortly after 3 p.m. Friday, Vancouver firefighters rushed to Cascade Middle School where a student on a bicycle crashed into another student on foot, said Capt. Dave James with the Vancouver Fire Department.

The students were a sixth-grader and a seventh-grader, but Friday night it was unknown which one was on the bike, James said.

One of the students suffered life-threatening injuries and was unconscious; the other student suffered less serious injuries, he said.

A firefighter-paramedic rode in the ambulance to help AMR Northwest paramedics keep the critically injured student alive during the ride to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center, James added.

Friday night, Vancouver police Cpl. Chad Williams said the student on the bike had been riding downhill in the parking lot along Northeast 138th Avenue when he hit the pedestrian.

The pedestrian suffered critical injuries; the bicyclist suffered a broken arm, Williams said.

On Monday, grief counselors will be available to help students, school district spokeswoman Carol Fenstermacher said.

Parents of both students were notified. The names of the students and how the crash occurred were not available Friday night.

Police will investigate.
